What Is a TOTP Code?

TOTP is a time-based one-time password standard used by many two-factor authentication services.

TOTP combines a shared secret known by your account provider and authenticator with the current time to calculate a short-lived numeric code. Both sides produce the same code when they use the same secret and an accurate clock.

Most TOTP codes refresh every 30 seconds. When the timer ends, the previous code expires and a new one becomes valid.

How to use it

  1. The account provider creates a shared secret or QR code.
  2. The authenticator reads the secret and current time.
  3. The authenticator calculates a six-digit code for sign-in.
